Research & Citizen Science

Cruise ships repeatedly travel many of the same ocean corridors. Cruise Scope is being developed to connect willing cruise passengers with legitimate ocean and marine research opportunities along those voyages.

Researchers define what would be useful.

Researchers can help define what would be scientifically useful to observe, where and when observations would help, what passengers should photograph or report, and what information should accompany an observation.

Cruise Scope can then explore presenting appropriate opportunities to participating passengers traveling through relevant areas. With appropriate consent and privacy protections, scientifically useful resulting observations can be made available to participating researchers.

Patent Pending

Voyage context grounded in the real ocean.

At a high level, Cruise Scope works with information that can help passengers understand the water and world around their voyage.

  • Real ocean observations
  • Marine and weather conditions
  • Ocean observation stations and mobile observing platforms
  • Approved ocean and coastal imagery
  • Marine wildlife information
  • Scientific and geographic discoveries
  • Route-relevant environmental information
  • Voluntary passenger observations

What could passengers help observe?

The right opportunity starts with a legitimate scientific question and a clear protocol. Possible areas include:

  • Sargassum and coastal conditions
  • Sharks and other marine wildlife
  • Tagged marine animals
  • Reefs and marine habitats
  • Waves and ocean conditions
  • Water appearance
  • Marine debris
  • Other researcher-defined observations

Are you an ocean or marine researcher?

If cruise passengers traveling repeated ocean routes could contribute useful observations to your work, tell us what you study, where observations would help, what passengers should look for, and help us design the scientific protocol.

Cruise Scope can explore putting that opportunity in front of participating passengers traveling through the appropriate area.

Voluntary, informed participation.

01

Participation is voluntary

Passengers choose whether to take part in a research opportunity.

02

The request should be clear

Passengers should know what a research project is asking them to contribute.

03

Protections fit the project

Appropriate consent and privacy protections apply, and the information collected may vary by research project.

Future collaborators

Approved research collaborators and participating researchers will be shared here as collaborations are established and public use is authorized.
